Latvian Saeima supports increasing fines for speeding

Saeima on January 22nd, 2015, supported in the second and final reading changes to the Latvian Administrative Violation Code, which foresees an increase in fines for substantial speeding violations, and a reduction in fines for small speeding violations.

The new law amendments foresee that persons caught speeding up to 10-km over the limit will receive a warning, LETA was informed by the Saeima's press service. Trucks can be hit with a warning or receive a fine of up to EUR 10.

 

For being 11 to 20 km over the limit on non-residential areas, drivers can either can receive a warning or hit with a fine of up to EUR 15. In residential areas, drivers can either receive a warning or hit with a fine of up to EUR 30. Meanwhile, trucks driving 11 to 20 km over the limit in non-residential areas can receive a warning of a fine of up to EUR 30, and in residential areas a fine of up to EUR 40.

 

There will also be a substantial increase for substantial speeding violations – by 51 to 60 km over the speed limit drivers can be hit with a fine between EUR 240 to 280 (EUR 120 to 140 at the moment), and speeding violations of over 60 km per hour EUR 350 to 650 (EUR 201 to 430 at the moment).
