While in Germany, Latvian Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss (Unity) addressed the issue of the recently amended Germany's wage law, which stipulates the minimum gross wage of EUR 8.50 per hour in Germany, which also affects the Latvian road carriers, the Transport Ministry informed LETA.

This regulation directly affects the transport field and applies to companies that offer their transport services within the territory of Germany, regardless of the fact whether the company is registered within or outside of Germany.

This issue was addressed during a discussion with German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Alexander Dobrindt. Matiss said that Latvia, as the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, has received several concerns about the new regulation. Dobrindt said that Germany, too, has received letters from international road transport companies, and that Germany's employment ministry has initiated consultations on this matter.

The European Commission is yet to decide whether to open a case against Germany in this matter.
