Over 2 mln people travelled between Estonia's mainland and islands in 2014

Väinamere Liinid, which operates ferry traffic on the Estonian mainland-Saaremaa island, mainland-Hiiumaa island and Saaremaa-Hiiumaa island routes, witnessed 3.8% growth in passenger numbers in 2014 while the number of vehicles transported grew by 6.1%, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Altogether, in 2014 the company serviced 2,072,345 passengers and 859,223 vehicles.


On the mainland-Saaremaa route, the number of passengers grew by 3.4% to 1,501,783 and number of vehicles by 5.4% to 623,689.

 

In the mainland-Hiiumaa route, the number of passengers grew by 5.2% to 531,642 and the number of vehicles 8.7% to 219,434.

 

On the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa route, passenger number fell by 673 to 38,920 while the number of vehicles fell by 150 to 16,100, mostly due to technical and weather conditions that cancelled many trips in the second half of the summer.
