EU Commission starts investigation regarding interests of Lithuanian carriers

Lithuanian MEP Antanas Guoga has met with Violeta Bulc, European commissioner for Transport, and received a promise to review the decisions which undermine the interests of the Lithuanian transport sector, reports LETA/ELTA.

MEP Guoga complained about protectionist actions of France and Belgium which are unfavourable both to Lithuania's carriers and the entire EU's carriers.

Under the new rules, drivers are not allowed to sleep in their vehicles while being in France and Belgium; drivers are forced to find themselves a hotel accommodation. Meanwhile, French and Belgian carriers can deliver their cargoes in one day or have a rest in the offices of their companies. This way, under the cover of drivers' health reasons, carriers from the EU member-states are being pushed out from transport routes of France and Belgium.

"The European Commission finally took into consideration the interests of Lithuania's carriers who not only were the most of all affected by the Russian embargo among the EU member-states but also are facing obstacles and protectionism on the internal EU market. The transport commissioner informed me about an investigation that the European Commission has launched in order to determine whether or not French and Belgian rules limit free movement of services in the EU. She promised to speed up the decision-making processes when it comes to issues particularly important to Lithuania," said MEP Guoga after the meeting with the Slovenian commissioner.
