Embankments in southern Estonia and northern Latvia to be connected as hiking trails

In a few years, it will be possible to move between Estonia and Latvia in a healthy, if slightly old-fashioned way, as the abandoned railway embankments found in the south of Estonia and north of Latvia will be turned into hiking trails to be connected with each other, according to the ERR reported writes LETA/BNS.

On Tuesday, the ambitious plan of Estonians and Latvians was announced in Limbazi - to accomplish clearing up and connecting the embankments of northern Latvia and southern Estonia with the aid of one million euros of EU project money. This way a network of several hundred kilometers of hiking trails would be created, allowing movement from one country to the other in all seasons.

"The goal is to preclude the use of motorized transportation. These trails are meant to be used for walking, cycling or horseback riding," said Raitis Sijats, chairman of the board of the Vidzeme Tourist Association.
