The Economics Ministry and the Latvian Investment and Development Agency in collaboration with the Transport Ministry are working on a special offer targeting potential tourists from China, Transport Ministry State Secretary Kaspars Ozolins said during a meeting with Wang Zhiqing, Deputy Administrator of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), on Thursday, March 9, reports LETA.

LETA was told at the Transport Ministry that during his visit to China, Ozolins met with the CAAC deputy administrator and discussed with him Latvia-China bilateral cooperation in the field of aviation.

Ozolins noted that the memorandum signed between the two countries would allow Latvian and Chinese airlines to develop cooperation to launch direct flights and stressed the role of Riga International Airport as the main air traffic hub in the Baltic states. The state secretary pointed to the cooperation opportunities provided by the willingness of Latvian carrier airBaltic to cooperate with Chinese carriers on opening routes between Latvia and China and/or flying passengers from China to smaller airports in Europe via Riga.

Last year, Latvian airspace was used by 13 Chinese carriers and the number of flights from China to Latvia rose by 9.1%against 2015.

Ozolins informed that work is under way to develop special offer targeting potential tourists from China to rouse their interest in traveling to Latvia, which in the future might increase the number of charter flights.

Ozolins has been taking part in a meeting of the Latvia-China Joint Committee as a member of the Latvian delegation and meeting with Chinese officials and representatives of the logistics industry.
