Latvian senior citizens are second less active travelers in the EU

10% of all nights in tourism accommodation facilities were spent by senior citizens over the age of 65 from Latvia, Bulgaria and Slovenia, which is the second lowest indicator in the EU, according to the latest Eurostat data for 2014.

According to Eurostat, only seniors in Malta (9%) are less active than in Latvia. Senior tourists of Estonia (11%) and Lithuania (12%) are slightly more active than in Latvia.


The biggest number of senior tourists in the general tourist flow has been registered in France and Cyprus (25%), the Czech Republic, Greece and Sweden (24%), Ireland and Portugal (23%).


Eurostat data suggest that in 2014, senior tourists over the age of 65 spend 1.2 blnnights in trips, which is 20% of all night spent in trips by all EU tourists.


Senior tourists in the EU prefer local destinations in their country (66%), compared to all tourists (59%). Such a trend is observed in the majority of EU member states, including in Latvia where 55% of senior tourists choose local destinations.
