Lithuania may face drop in tourist numbers in 2016

With less money earmarked for the marketing of Lithuania as a tourism destination in 2016 compared with 2015, it is feared that less advertising abroad will lead to a decline in foreign tourist arrivals, the business daily Verslo Zinios reported on November 11th, reports LETA/BNS.

The Economy Ministry says that 2 million euros are to be allocated from EU support funds and another 0.3 million euros from the national budget for the marketing of Lithuanian tourism opportunities abroad in 2016.

"The EU money allocated for next year is intended for the marketing of public cultural and natural heritage sites. This means that local authorities, for example, will be able to use the money to advertise their public resources, such as the Puntukas boulder, a church, Druskininkai water or something like this," Zydre Gaveliene, president of the National Tourism Business Association, told the paper.

"The money cannot be used to advertise any tourism service that has any connection with a business," she said.
