Airbnb taking away earnings from hotels in Estonia

Leasing one's flat or house to tourists via the Airbnb system is becoming increasingly popular in Estonia, writes LETA/Delfi.

Martin Vahter, Managing Director of the real estate company 1Partner Kinnisvara, said that there are more than 1,000 ads from Estonia in the popular P2P portal Airbnb, and as the summer has not been great in terms of tourism, this is a threat to official local accommodation establishments.

Vahter commented that Airbnb is doing what Uber is doing in the taxi sector. “There are already small-time entrepreneurs in Estonia who lease flats in various places, in order to sub-lease them on a day-to-day basis via Airbnb,” he said.

According to him, the main negative aspect of Airbnb is the loss in tax revenue.
