President Valdas Adamkus welcomed the participants of round-table discussion "Public and National Assignment for Educator Training: Problems and Prospects" held on Friday and urged them to undertake the reform of teacher training system and formulate explicit tasks for the training raised by the state, as well as to return prestige to the profession of teacher.

Round-table discussion "Public and National Assignment for Educator Training: Problems and Prospects".

According to the head of state, all talks about the improvement of education system will remain just talks if individuals, who continue planning reforms and implementing them, will pay insufficient attention for the main target of education – children and youth," stated Adamkus.

"Youth after school must be creative and inquisitive, sensitive to a person close to them and not indifferent to the future of the society, where they live. Therefore, it is very important to know in what hands we grant the future of our children and society," Adamkus was cited by the press service of the president.

President Adamkus noted that the Ministry of Education and Science, as the contracting authority of teacher training, had to form explicit policies for educator training, which would become obligatory for all institutions preparing teachers.

"We have to return the prestige to Lithuanian schools. The profession of teacher must become attractive and competitive in the labor market, and only the most creative and talented graduates should choose this profession. Creativity and constant improvement should become the daily routine for a teacher. Thus, we must find ways to encourage young people to choose this difficult path, which would help to build the School – the real community of learners," highlighted the head of state.

The president wished the participants of the discussion to find all the necessary answers and ways, which would help to form the commission of the state to train educators and allow using the finance allocated for educator training and qualification more efficiently.
