Representatives of the Riga Construction Board have inspected about 300 public buildings in Riga since the Zolitude tragedy. A total of 3,886 buildings were inspected in the first nine months of the year 2014, the Riga Construction Board informed LETA.

After the Maxima supermarket collapse on November 21, 2013, the Economy Ministry ordered the construction boards to inspect public buildings in Riga. More than 300 buildings were inspected in four months after the tragedy, including 200 major public buildings and 117 supermarkets, the Riga Construction Board's spokeswoman Ilze Zuka told LETA.

The Riga Construction Board inspectors have inspected a total of 3,886 buildings in the first nine months of this year.

The inspections revealed that supermarkets were usually affected by various types of defects – cracks, damage caused by humidity, etc. The owners of these buildings were told to commission independent in-depth examination and present the conclusions thereof to the construction board.

She said that the number of residents' complaints about the safety of supermarkets, apartment houses, and other public buildings has increased as well since the tragedy.

The owners of these buildings are fully responsible for the technical condition of the buildings, the construction board explains.
