Riga residents petition against selling of Lucavsala

BC, Riga, 23.09.2014.Print version
A petition has been initiated on the online petition platform Manabalss.lv to cancel the Riga City Council's decision to sell Lucavsala, informs LETA.

The petition began on September 5.

The author of the petition is Marta Zeltina, who demands that "the inconsiderate sale of Riga city properties, and destruction of green zones, as well as natural and cultural values be stopped".

She stresses that the issue requires a much larger attention from the society.

The initiative expresses a wish to preserve Lucavsala as the "green center" of Riga, offering a balance between the social needs of residents and the economic interests of the city, as well as preserved natural and cultural values. Furthermore, Lucavsala is a place that has offered community gardens for the residents of Riga for many years.

Zeltina believes that there needs to be a law that prohibits the Riga municipality from selling state properties (that belong to all citizens) without the consent of the public.

The aim of the initiative is to cancel the Riga City Council's decision to sell Lucavsala, as the decision violates the interests of residents of Riga.
