First round of demolition of collapsed Maxima in Riga over

Maxima Latvija has concluded the first round of demolition of the remains of the collapsed supermarket in Zolitude last week, Maxima Latvija spokesman Janis Beseris informed LETA.

Thus, the territory at 20 Priedaines Street in Riga has been prepared for further activity – conservation job for the building's basement floor and the nearby apartment complex. It will be carried out by the property's co-owners Homburg Zolitude, reports Nozare.lv.

 

The territory's clean-up began on August 18, including removal of debris, and demolition of the building's above-ground structure.

 

Homburg Zolitude is responsible for fencing off the territory, providing security, and conservation of the building's basement floor.

 

Riga City Council has yet to decide on what to do with the apartment building in the vicinity of the tragedy site, as the experts have not heard conclusions about its condition.

 

As reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when the Maxima supermarket caved in on November 21, 2013.
