Riga residents petition against selling of Lucavsala
The Environmental Protection Club's vice-president Elita Krumina told LETA that in regard to Lucavsala, the Riga City Council twice has denied residents the freedom to express opinion – once during a meeting at the Riga City Council City Development Department, where Vice-Mayor Andris Ameriks (Honor to Serve Riga) explained that it is not within Riga City Council's agenda to listen to third parties, another time – during the council meeting, when it was decided to sell Lucavsala. With the majority of votes, coalition councilmen decided to deny Chairwoman of "Jumpravsala" Rasma Grina her opportunity to express her opinion.
"Councilmen do not care at all about the people. The decision to strip Lucavsala without informing the people, was an immoral action. One week ago they [Riga City Council] bragged that residents of Riga can finally witness a social-democratic policy, but afterwards they rob those, who are not so well-informed," Krumina believes.
Currently, those who opposed to the privatization of Lucavsala are trying to seek ways on how to reverse Riga City Council's decision. Krumina admitted that it will not be easy, as the municipality can handle its properties in any way it wants.
Meanwhile, "Lucavsala eco community" and "Free Riga" representatives are preparing to petition against the selling of Lucavsala.
