New Construction Law in Latvia to take effect in October

BC, Riga, 24.04.2014.Print version
The Saeima of Latvia today in the final reading adopted amendments to the Construction Law, which will come into force on October 1, 2014, not May 1 as stipulated in the original version of the law, informs LETA.

Amendments to the law provide founding of a new Construction Management Department. The department will be responsible for supervising the construction and restoration of the largest buildings of public importance. This concerns buildings which are inhabited by more than 100 people daily. Construction inspectors will also supervise construction projects, commissioned by the local governments, for the construction or reconstruction of buildings if the contract amount is EUR 1.5 million or more.

The department will control the maintenance of public buildings as well. Furthermore, it will have to ensure maintenance of the Construction Information System.

Starting October 1, the department will inform competency evaluation institutions about violations by construction specialists, foster the cooperation between supervising authorities and non-governmental organizations involved in the building process, help construction experts improve their professional competence.

Starting January 1 next year, the department will begin to supervise the maintenance of public buildings. From next year's July 1, the department will have to perform all of its tasks provided in the Construction Law, as well as ensure maintenance of the Construction Information System and organize construction projects and inspections of buildings.
