39 public buildings in Riga found unsafe by Construction Control Office

The State Construction Control Office (BVKB) in Latvia has found 39 public buildings unsafe, the office reported LETA.

According to the office, in 2017, 7 percent of the inspected buildings have been found unsafe for public use, including 21 buildings that are not in use for several years already, and use of other 18 buildings has been stopped.

BKVB director Svetlana Mjakuskina said that after the tragic Maxima store collapse in Riga in 2013 the attitude of persons involved in the construction process has changed.

Even though a system has now been established to prevent repetition of such tragedy, self-control systems of the construction processes are still important. "It is important that builders have introduced internal control systems that ensure that they can control processes, the used materials, technologies to ensure safety of buildings. We see that there are positive trends, but there are concerns that not all are that conscientious," she said.

As reported, several successive roof cave-ins in the building housing a Maxima supermarket in the Zolitude residential area in Riga occurred on November 21, 2013, killing 54 people, including three rescuers, and injuring dozens of other people. A criminal investigation has been started into the deadly accident which might have been caused by several factors, including errors in construction designs, neglect on part of the builders or the supermarket operator.
