Another attempt to sell former building of National Library of Latvia fails

An auction at which Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (VNI), the company managing public properties in Latvia, was selling the former building of the National Library of Latvia failed on August 3rd, as no bidder applied to buy the property at 14 Barona Street in Riga, VNI representative Jolanta Gramatniece told LETA.

"There is interest in the building, potential buyers have even arrived to see the building, but for the time being nobody has applied to the auctions. The VNI management will soon decide on organizing another auction," Gramatniece said.

The starting price at the auction had been set at EUR 2,129,600.

Previous auctions, which were organized in September 2015, February, May, September and November of 2016, as well as January, March and June of this year failed to draw any bidders.

The starting price of the former library building has been gradually lowered from EUR 3.872 million at the auctions.

Earlier, VNI representative Arnis Blodons told LETA that selling the property was difficult because it houses many privately-owned apartments and that any future actions affecting the building would have to be agreed with the apartments' owners.

The National Library of Latvia relocated to its new building in Pardaugava in 2014.
