Some 75% of buildings inspected by the State Construction Control Office do not meet the applicable construction requirements, as the office's director Maris Demme told Latvian Television this morning.

The Construction Control Office inspected around 150 public buildings in the first quarter of the year. "Unfortunately, the results are not very encouraging as 75% of the buildings do not meet various construction requirements," said Demme, adding that last year the proportion was 47%.

However, none of these buildings is in such a poor shape that it should be closed immediately, said Demme. Most of the problems found by the Construction Control Office deal with mechanical properties, various cracks, accessibility, and unauthorized construction activity.

The owners of these buildings have been very forthcoming in fixing these problems, and no one has had to be fined so far, Demme also said.
