Riga Circus has to become multifunctional and modern circus
Circus in Latvia has a history of over 120 years, and it is important for circus development to continue and evolve so it would also include an educational component and new resident programs, taking into consideration that wild animals will not be allowed in circus performances from 2018, told Lita Kokale, head of the Culture Ministry's Public Relations Department.
The Culture Ministry arrived at the conclusion after evaluation of the Riga Circus strategy for 2017-2020 and a new concept seeing the Riga Circus as a multifunctional, contemporary circus and art venue.
The Riga Circus is one of the oldest buildings in Europe constructed specifically for circus needs, and it has the status of a monument of cultural and historic importance. The Riga Circus building has to be renovated to acquire a new quality, therefore the concept of the Riga Circus has to be altered and improved accordingly, explained the Culture Ministry's State Secretary Sandis Voldins.
As reported, EUR 263,211 has been allotted from the government's emergency funds for the Riga Circus. Of this amount, EUR 188,287 will be spent on reinforcing the facade of the building, and EUR 44,674 on in-depth inspection of the building.
