Latvia shows 3rd fastest construction decline in EU in Q1

During the first quarter of 2016, construction in Latvia slowed down by 19% from the first three months of last year, which was the third steepest drop among EU member states, according to updated Eurostat information on all 28 members of the bloc, writes LETA.

The two countries where construction dropped faster than in Latvia were Slovenia (-31.3%) and Hungary (-27.6).


In January-March 2016, construction output decreased in 14 EU member states, while the other 14 countries reported growth.


In the first quarter of this year, construction picked up 14.2% in Sweden, 13.5% in Spain and 12.1% in Ireland. In Estonia, just like in Croatia, construction output rose 3.4% year-on-year in the three months of 2016.


Across the EU, construction grew by 1.7% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, while the 19 members of the eurozone reported 2.8% growth. In quarterly terms, construction increased by 0.1% in the EU and by 0.9% in the eurozone.
