Neringa municipality should compensate EUR 1.15 mln for the demolished restaurant in Juodkrante

Vilnius Regional Administrative Court on August 21st ruled that Neringa municipality may compensate by August 2016 EUR 1.15 million in damages to businesspeople whose fish restaurant in Juodkrante was demolished even though they had the necessary building permits, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

People's property was destroyed although they were innocent, whereas officials who granted building permits remain unpunished. According to a lawyer and signatory of the Independence Act, Egidijus Bickauskas, unfortunately there is no such practice in Lithuania that a public servant who makes a wrong or illegal decision may be held financially responsible.

Meanwhile now all people are responsible for officials' actions even though they have nothing to do with them.

"I also question whether demolishing all these buildings, for example the restaurant in Juodkrante, is statesmanlike. The restaurant did not ruin the landscape and did not trouble anyone, but was demolished only due to formal reasons. It is not statesmanlike indeed. But here the bare letter of the law is often followed, without taking into consideration common sense," said Bickauskas.
