BC, Riga, 12.08.2015.Print version
Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art will be a place for innovations and experiments, Latvian Minister of Culture Dace Melbarde said on August 11th, reports LETA.

The museum will have a permanent exhibition and a number of temporary exhibitions to showcase masterpieces from all around the world. Also, the museum will be a place where young Latvian artists will exhibit their works.

Melbarde said that an expert committee has been set up and they have developed the museum's concept, which will be presented to the public this fall. "Not only the museum's visual image is important, the content also matters a lot, as only then we can move on with building the museum," emphasized Melbarde.

The museum's building could be designed already next year, and the museum's foundation stone could be laid as a present for Latvia's 100 anniversary.

Melbarde emphasized that museum is a philanthropic project and the art patrons will donate EUR 30 million for the project. Culture Ministry's State Secretary Sandis Voldins explained that by the time the project is completed in 2021, Latvia will not have spent a cent on the project. The government's contribution will come later through the development of contemporary art processes in Latvia. When the museum is built, the state could provide co-funding for creation of the museum's collection.

It is too soon to speak about the sum that the state will contribute, he added.

According to the Culture Ministry's concept, the new museum will be the largest exhibition hall in the Baltic countries.

The museum will be also a social platform, it will include a multifunctional auditorium with 200 seats, a library and reading room, educational project classes, an experimental lab for art students, a cafe, and more.

The museum's collection will be stored separately from the museum's building.

On October 30, 2014 the Culture Ministry and the Latvian Contemporary Art Museum Fund, financed by its founders – the Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation and "ABLV Charitable Foundation", signed an agreement on construction of the Contemporary Art Museum. "ABLV Bank" will be the main supporter of the museum's collection, based on a cooperation agreement signed on September 23, 2005.

The construction of the Contemporary Art Museum will be completed by November 18, 2021. The Contemporary Art Museum Fund will also run the museum and build and maintain the museum's collection. The founders of the fund will provide at least EUR 30 million for the construction of the museum.

The Museum of Contemporary Art will be located in an uptown area between Hanzas Street, Pulkveza Brieza Street, and Skanstes Street.
