BC, Riga, 30.07.2015.Print version
At the moment, the Riga City Council "has no possibility" of offering premises for refugees in Riga, according to Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center), cites LETA.

"In this situation, we will be unable to provide support for the government," said Usakovs.

In commenting on rumors that Riga municipality could offer a former school building on Skuju Street, Usakovs said that there are plans for the coming years to use this building as a base for storage of VEF Culture Center's property during renovations. Afterwards, the building could be used for social events for the residents of Riga.

Several municipalities in Latvia have agreed to provide premises for accommodation of refugees, as LNT reported. Some municipalities, for example Kuldiga and Rezekne municipalities, have refused to participate in providing accommodation for the refugees.

As reported, during an emergency Cabinet meeting on July 6, the government approved Latvia's position on providing asylum for refugees, agreeing that Latvia could accommodate a total of 250 immigrants in the next two years.
