Riga Circus announces tender to inspect condition of building

BC, Riga, 22.07.2015.Print version
The Riga Circus has wasted no time in announcing a tender for a technical probe into the building's condition at Merkela Street 4 in downtown Riga, reports LETA.

Deadline for the offer is July 31, 2015.

The tender has been announced at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, with the ministry noting that construction engineers conducted an inspection of the building following the fire this past spring, and they concluded that there is no direct threat to Circus spectators.

State Construction Control Bureau (SCCB) experts disagree, saying that the edifice should not be open to the public. SCCB Planning and Analysis Department Director Raimonds Pelna declared earlier that the Circus is in poor condition; it requires major renovations and a reinforced support structure.

"Our office's assessment indicates that the entire support structure is seriously deformed, including the roof. Bricks from all chimneys are crumbling, and threaten to fall. We have reason to believe the facade has become detached from the building itself, and it certainly fails to meet fire safety standards," said Pelna.
