U.S. special envoy: restitution of Jewish-owned property in Latvia must be resolved in cooperation

BC, Tallinn, 14.04.2015.Print version
The matter of restitution of Jewish property has to be resolved "working shoulder to shoulder," according to U.S. Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues, Nicholas Dean, during an interview with LETA.

In dealing with the aftermath of the Holocaust, Dean told LETA that a key aspect is "good will." Good will is one of the ways how the United States treats the Holocaust and restitution, which are further incorporated in the cooperation pact between the United States and Latvia, he said.

Dean added that U.S.-Latvia cooperation is based on several "pillars", such as defense and economic ties.

When asked whether the United States has pressured Latvia in any way on the matter of restitution, Dean replied that the word "pressure" does not describe relations between the two countries. "Collaboration" is what describes U.S.-Latvia relations, he added.

Asked whether risk prevails that U.S.-Latvia relations might suffer if agreement is not reached, Dean replied that such a scenario does not even enter his mind, as the countries share both a long and relatively recent history of cooperation, adding that a new phase is being developed right now.
