120 square meters were ablaze at Riga Circus; one animal dead

BC, Riga, 20.03.2015.Print version
A fire of unknown origin hit the Riga Circus complex yesterday. Riga Circus reports that despite a mostly successful evacuation of all animals from its burning complex, there was one fatality – a python is dead, informs LETA.

The probable cause was the heavy smoke and severe heat.

The Fire Service reports that 120 square meters were aflame and that the emergency call came in at 15:37; the fire was brought under control in about one hour.

The Fire Service is refraining from speculating what ignited the fire, and that the Service "has no authority to either prohibit or permit the Circus from continuing operations."

Intars Zitans of the Service added that until the premises have been fully checked, and completely aired out, "the animals cannot return anyway."

The Service also reports that 50 firefighters worked at the scene yesterday and 13 trucks were sent out, including hook and ladders.

The blaze erupted in the Circus' courtyard building's top floor, and the roof was also aflame. Firefighters and circus personnel were quick to evacuate the animals on the premises.

The Riga Circus building dates back to 1888.
