In January 2015, marauders destroyed three archaeological monuments of national importance in Latgale Region, reports LETA, referring to the newspaper "Latvijas Avize".

These burial grounds date back to the 14th century. A total of 200 graves have been destroyed.

Marauders are using metal detectors in their wake, looking for ancient bronze bracelets, iron axes, and spear heads. Such items were buried together with ancient Latgalian men and women more than 700 years ago. They are often sold on international online marketplaces as Viking artifacts.

The largest damage was inflicted on an ancient burial place near Logini Village in Vilaka County. The cemetery is located in a remote place in a pine forest. The said burial site was a 11th-12th century barrow cemetery ground, containing various ancient jewelry pieces.
