The Estonian government approved on Thursday of the agreement between Estonia and EU Agency for large-scale IT systems (EU LISA), under which the state will build the agency headquarters for 8.4 million euros in Tallinn, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"It is of symbolic significance for Estonia that the IT agency headquarters will be located in Tallinn. This reinforces the image of Estonia as IT capable state," said Interior Minister Hanno Pevkur. "It is no less important that the strategic planning team will be located here who will handle the IT systems development work in EU justice and interior issues."

Estonian promises to build the agency office space for up to 100 people and give it to free use. The complex is due to be completed by December 2017. The state budget strategy for 2014-2017 provides for EUR 8.4 million for the building.

The agreement also determines the status and rights of workers of the IT agency. For instance, employees of the office get equal treatment and immunity as staff of diplomatic representations. Estonian state immigration restrictions don’t apply to the employees and their family members
