Collection containers to be installed in African swine fever areas in Estonia

Animal waste processing company AS Vireen started installing collecting containers for collecting wild boar carcasses that have been diagnosed with the African swine plague; initially five containers will be installed in the areas where the disease has been found in Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Veterinary and Food Board director general Ago Pärtel explained that because winter weather conditions make it difficult to bury the carcasses, and new findings of animals suspected of having the disease come on daily basis, leakproof containers are installed in all regions where the disease has been found.

"Collecting the disease material in containers will also help to avoid the risk of other wild animals digging up the possibly infectious carcasses," added Pärtel.

The containers are placed in Valga County's Hummuli and Õru parishes; Viljandi County's Tarvastu parish; Võru County's Varstu parish and Ida-Viru County's Lüganuse parish.

In the coming weeks, a mobile incinerator will arrive in Estonia, which can be used to destroy wild boar carcasses on-site to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

So far, swine fever in domestic pigs has not been diagnosed in Estonia yet.
