EU commissioner and Lithuanian health minister discuss public health

European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis met with Lithuanian Minister of Health Rimante Salaseviciute on Monday. The two discussed the transposition of the Tobacco Products Directive into national law and other issues, informs LETA/ELTA.

During Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union an agreement was reached regarding the directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States concerning the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products.

 

Minister of Health Salaseviciute informed European Commissioner Andriukaitis that an inter-service working party was established on the transposition of the directives' provisions into national legislation. It is expected to complete its tasks by March 2015.

 

The meeting also addressed issues of drug, tobacco and alcohol control and prevention, EU reference networks, possible Lithuania's assistance to Western African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak, food safety and other issues related to public health.
