The Estonian Emergency Response Centre will start the transition to the single emergency number 112 at the start of the next year and in the future, those who need help can make calls to the police, rescue services and ambulance using a single telephone number, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Emergency Response Centre Spokeswoman Jaana Padrik told Postimees that the centre is in principle ready for the single emergency number 112, but they have to wait till the new buildings for the Centre and the Rescue Board are completed in Tallinn and Tartu.

"For the transition to the single emergency phone number, the Emergency Response Centre and Police and Border Guard Board’s operative services have to start working in the new buildings and in a common work environment, according to current plans in Tartu in December this year and in Tallinn by the end of January next year," said Padrik.

Then common information system needs to be worked on and in February the Emergency Response Centre will start informing people of the use of the single number.

For a longer transitional period, the current police phone number 110 remains in use too and callers will be automatically redirected to the number 112.
