The Seimas in Lithuania, which on Thursday is deliberating on the 2015 budget, decided to additionally allocate LTL 17 million (EUR 5 million) for the increase of salaries of cultural and arts employees working in state and municipal institutions, informs LETA/ELTA.

The proposal was put forward by Minister of Education and Culture Sarunas Birutis, Chair of the Seimas Committee on Education, Science and Culture Audrone Pitrenaite and other members of parliament.

Minister of Culture Birutis said that the aforementioned amount was chosen after considering financial possibilities of the state and establishing concrete resources. "We have proposed to cut governance expenditure and appropriations for government debt administration in order to ensure the consistent increase of salaries of cultural and arts employees," said Birutis.

According to the minister, based on the latest data, salaries of Lithuanian cultural and arts employees comprise only 59% of the average public sector salaries. The figure in Latvia stands at 89% and in Estonia it exceeds the average and amounts to 102%.

Last year salaries of cultural and arts employees were raised by two basic wages, by around LTL 244 (EUR 70.7).
