Estonia will enable health insurance to freelance creative professionals

BC, Tallinn, 04.12.2014.Print version
The Estonian government approved and sent to the Riigikogu a draft law that ensures health insurance for freelance creative professionals and other persons who have irregular income or persons working for several employers, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

According to the Tax and Customs Board, the amendment extends health insurance to about 4,000 people.

According to the bill, the start and suspension of insurance coverage will be related to submitting social tax declaration to the Tax and Customs Board.

To get health insurance cover, social tax amounting to at least the monthly rate stipulated with the state budget for that budgetary year has to be declared for a person (this year, 105.6 EUR calculated on 320 EUR, 117.15 EUR on 355 EUR in 2015).

According to current regulations, health insurance is provided to a person only if one employer pays the required minimum amount of social tax for a person, meaning that people, who fulfil small random orders or work part-time for several employers, are deprived of social insurance since the tax paid for them by different companies or customers is not summed up.
