BC, Tallinn, 16.10.2014.Print version
The Estonian government allocated on Thursday to the Ministry of Agriculture 267,500 euros to prevent the spread of African swine fever, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The Ministry of Agriculture requested from the government reserves 267,500 euros to prevent the spread of African swine fever, an especially dangerous infectious animal disease.

The first case of the African swine plague in Estonia was confirmed on 4 September this year, in a wild boar and so far no cases of the disease have been recorded among domestic pigs.

Based on the experience of the neigh boring countries of Latvia and Lithuania, it is important to prepare for a situation where the disease does reach domestic animals. Both Latvia and Lithuania had to urgently solve the issue of destroying infected pigs in site. The best solution was mobile incinerators for disposal of the pig carcasses. The allocation to the ministry thus includes an allocation of 227,500 euros for AS Vireen to acquire one mobile incinerator and cover its handling costs.
