Lithuanian Health Ministry may be granted access to patients' data

BC, Vilnius, 16.10.2014.Print version
The Lithuanian Government has approved the amendments to the Law on Public Health Monitoring that have been proposed by the Ministry of Health. If the proposal finds support at the Seimas, the Ministry of Health as well as institutions under it will be authorised to process patients' personal data for statistical purposes, informs LETA/ELTA.

Currently data collection on certain persons' health is fragmented – it is gathered for research purposes or when specific cases of a disease are examined. Based on the Law on Legal Protection of Personal Data, the procedure of grossing up would be non-personal and would not reveal sensitive private information.

The Ministry of Health said the amendments are necessary in order to collect quality data about morbidity, distinguish ineffective treatment methods and evaluate the effectiveness of preventative measures.
