An agreement was reached during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) in Luxembourg, stipulating that the European Commission will cover up to 75 percent of costs of measures against African swine fever in Latvia, the Agriculture Ministry informed the business portal Nozare.lv, cites LETA.

As reported, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Greens and Farmers' Union) visited Luxembourg yesterday to participate in the AGRIFISH Council meeting to also discuss African swine fever prevention measures. All countries that have been affected by African swine fever agree that the European Union must cover the full cost of the measures aimed at preventing the disease from spreading.

Latvia has allocated a total of EUR 2,688,866 from its state budget in order to fight the disease.

So far, African swine fever has been found in 119 wild boars in 25 counties, as well as in 72 domestic pigs. A total of 564 domestic pigs have been culled. Last case of African swine fever in a domestic pig was detected on September 19.

Data on a time period between April 1 and September 14 indicates that a total of 7,061 wild boars have been hunted.

As reported, taking into account that new cases of African swine fever are regularly discovered in Latvia, the government decided to expand the emergency zone almost up to Riga, as well as to extend the emergency period to January 1, 2015.
