Grybauskaite doesn’t give up on her amendments to public information law

BC, Vilnius, 14.10.2014.Print version
Chief presidential advisor on legal affairs Rasa Svetikaite says that the Seimas did not examine properly Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite's amendments to the Law on the Provision of Information to the Public and their rejection on 7 October only reinforced the president's resolution to fight with propaganda, harmful to the state, cites LETA/ELTA.

"The least what it [the Seimas' rejection – Elta] poses is surprise and disappointment. When we must make immediate decisions regarding the state's protection from dirty propaganda and disinformation, the Seimas, unfortunately, did not even want to discuss this. I would like to believe that it was just a mistake or an accident," the presidential advisor said.

Grybauskaite's representative implied that the amendments will be forwarded to the Seimas once again but did not mention any details about how they could be improved.

The amendments presented by the president propose showing at least 90% of retransmitted broadcastings in Lithuania in the languages of the European Union. The amendments also speak about expanded powers of the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania: the commission could impose monetary penalties for promotion and incitement of war and calls to threaten Lithuania's sovereignty and independence.
