During his visit to North East Estonian town Sillamäe on Tuesday, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas visited the facility of Molycorp Silmet, a rare earth metal processor, and the Port of Sillamäe, and he thanked the companies for their contribution to the economic development of Estonia, reports LETA, referring to government communication unit.

According to the Prime Minister, Molycorp Silmet is an excellent example of high quality specialisation.

“It is impressive that metals that are highly valued by high-tech industries are produced in Estonia and that their export volumes, considering their rarity, are considerable on a global scale,” said Rõivas.

Molycorp Silmet is one of the largest science-intensive high technology companies in Estonia. It produces up to 3 percent of rare earth metals in the world.

The Prime Minister also visited the Port of Sillamäe – the second largest merchant port in Estonia. The port has an increasing role in the Estonian transport system and the economy as a whole.

The Prime Minister also attended the opening ceremony of a new shale oil plant of Viru Keemia Grupp (VKG) – Petroter II. Rõivas completed his visit to Ida-Virumaa in Jõhvi where he met with local people.
