Estonian government will restore ban on public drinking

BC, Tallinn, 26.09.2014.Print version
The Estonian government will initiate a law enforcement law amendment to re-introduce the ban on alcohol consumption in public places that was valid in Estonia till July 2014, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"In short, the purpose of the law amendment is that while currently, public consumption of alcohol is allowed everywhere and municipalities have the right to impose public drinking ban areas, then we want to restore the general ban on public alcohol consumption and give municipalities the right to establish areas where drinking alcohol is allowed," Prime Minister Tavi Rõivas told Postimees.

Rõivas said that the public reaction to the law amendment that allowed public consumption of alcohol shows clearly that the public is not satisfied with such an arrangement. According to him, the government rather aims to pursue a strict alcohol policy.

Rõivas said that there is unanimity in the government on this issue. The Ministry of Justice sent this morning the draft law amending the law enforcement law to other ministries for a coordination round.
