Lithuanian Seimas approves of ritual slaughter of animals

BC, Vilnius, 24.09.2014.Print version
On Tuesday, the Seimas in Lithuania approved the proposed amendments to the Law on Welfare and Protection of Animals, allowing ritual slaughter of animals from 2015, reports LETA/ELTA.

A total of 57 members of parliament in favour and 4 against with 11 abstentions.

The ritual slaughter of animals will allow slaughtering farm animals without any prior stunning, in accordance with specific methods as required by religious rites.

Such countries as Germany, France and many other member-states of the European Union allow ritual slaughter following the rite because the EU regulations permit such way of slaughtering.

Lithuanian businessmen will now have all legal conditions to export farm animals to Muslim countries which provide for such requirements relating to animal slaughtering without stunning.
