Estonian Chamber of Commerce, Employers' Confederation, the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Forces concluded on Monday a good will and cooperation agreement, which aims to highlight the wish of companies and employers to contribute to the Estonian national defence, LETA/Äripäev.ee reports.

"Estonia's independent defence ability is effective when in a crisis situation, people operate as a united Estonia," said Defence Minister Sven Mikser. "Security does not just happen, thus training exercises have to be organised on a regular basis during peacetime too, in order to maintain a rapid response capability, and if necessary, be prepared to handle a crisis," he said.

By signing the agreement, companies express the will and support to raise the reservists' authority in society, and to encourage participation of reservists in reserve training exercises.

"For the Defence Forces, it is a symbolic treaty, where for the first time, we are together with employers moving toward closer cooperation and understanding. Today's agreement is just the first milestone in our cooperation," said Chief of Defence Forces, Major General Riho Terras at the signing ceremony.

On 4th-15th May next year, the Estonian Defence Forces will be organising one of the biggest exercises of the Baltic Sea region, Hedgehog 2015, where nearly 12,000 reservists, conscripts and active military will participate. Almost half of the participants are thereby reservists who need to get days off work for the time of the exercise.
