Following Latvia's proposal, the European Commission has reviewed the stipulated restrictions on territories hit by African swine fever, and decided that the new amendments will allow transport of live pigs and pork from these territories, the Agriculture Ministry's representatives informed the business portal Nozare.lv, cites LETA.

The new amendments stipulate that by regularly performing laboratory investigations, domestic pigs from the third zone of quarantine will be allowed to be transported to slaughterhouses in all territories of Latvia.

Pigmeat obtained from this zone, will be allowed to be distributed only within Latvia, furthermore, it will have to be marked with a special branding.

Pigmeat from the second zone of quarantine will be allowed to be transported to the European Union (EU) and third countries, after carrying out laboratory examinations and following strict regulations.

Meanwhile, pigmeat from the first zone of quarantine will have no restrictions within the EU.

The European Commission's decision also contains regulations on non-food products. The new decision will come into effect after it is published in the EU's official journal.

As reported, African swine fever has hit 66 domestic pigs in 31 farms so far. A total of 521 domestic pigs have been culled from herds.

The disease has also taken 75 wild boars in 21 counties.
