Estonian milk producers will hand out free milk

Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will organize next Wednesday at the Vabaduse Square in Tallinn, a so-called pouring milk down the drain day "Milk Day" where they distribute free dairy products to people, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

With the protest, they want to emphasize that production of milk is a useful and promising economic sector for Estonia and the negative impact of the Russian import ban on the dairy sector is very big.

The Chamber thinks that businesses should be supported to survive the crisis, so that the sudden crisis would not cause long-term damage. They demand the state to allocate the means, and add that the state would be able to allocate from this year's budget 23 million euros to farmers.

The Chamber Agriculture and Commerce agriculture sphere specialist Martin Vilan said that the action should draw attention to the problems of the sector. "For some time it is great that milk is cheap, but when people are going to be unemployed in rural areas, it is not fun anymore," said Vilan.

He said that the essence it is a pouring milk down the drain event, but while in Brussels, farmers actually pour milk down, Estonian farmers have a negative attitude towards such things and they would rather distribute free milk to people.

Passers-by will be distributed 1,000 litres of 3.5% milk in bottles with the logo of the event. The chamber called dairies to donate milk to the Food Bank too.

A bottle of fresh milk will be taken to all members of Parliament and the Government.
