Buffer zone against African swine fever virus in Estonia to be expanded

BC, Tallinn, 01.09.2014.Print version
On Saturday, the decision of the European Commission expanding the buffer zone for prevention of African swine fever on the Estonian southern border entered into force, writes LETA/Äripäev.ee.

“Thus far African swine fever has not been diagnosed in Estonia,” said Director General of the Veterinary and Food Board Ago Pärtel. “However, as attempts to halt the spreading of the virus in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have not been successful, the European Commission decided to expand buffer zones in the Baltic States and in Poland,” he added, noting that the measure ought to help avoid transference of the virus in new areas.

Buffer zones are virus-free areas under intensive veterinary supervision.

From July 25, it has been prohibited to keep domestic pigs and farm-raised wild boards in outdoor conditions on the entire territory of Estonia.
