Milk buying-in prices in Lithuania won’t be reduced by more than 12% in August

BC, Vilnius, 22.08.2014.Print version
Government officials and milk processors in Lithuania agreed that in August 2014 milk produced in Lithuania will be bought-in and the price will not be reduced by more than 12%, i.e. by approximately LTL 0.10 (EUR 0.03) per litre, reports LETA/ELTA.

Processors assured Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius that claims about 30-40% reduction in milk buying-in prices were not true. According to Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene, some processors proposed to reduce the price by 35%, but changed their minds later on.

Processors provided proof that milk buying-in prices were not reduced retroactively. Purportedly, in some companies price was reduced by 7% only after 16 August, and later it was proposed to be further reduced by 12%.

According to the prime minister and the agriculture minister, another meeting to discuss prices will be held before 1 September.

"If prices decrease in Europe, and their reduction is predicted, then they will drop in Lithuania too. We have to meet before September and discuss on what price should be retained in September," said Baltraitiene.
