Lithuanian PM criticizes processors for reducing milk buying-in prices

BC, Vilnius, 20.08.2014.Print version
Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius has criticized dairy processors, who have reduced milk buying-in prices as soon as Russia introduced its sanctions, reports LETA/ELTA.

"I would like to address the heads of dairy processing companies and I am very dissatisfied that from the first day when the Russian sanctions were introduced an unfair approach was taken – prices for diary producers were significantly reduced," told Butkevicius in an interview with LRT radio.

The head of the Government said that this situation would be considered both during the Cabinet sitting on Wednesday, when assistance to business following the Russian sanctions would be discussed, and on Thursday, during the meeting with dairy companies.

"We will discuss it today and tomorrow, why such decisions have been taken immediately, though we have held meeting with heads of retail companies and they have been really benevolent to accept goods intended for Russia. I think a dialogue is necessary as well as mutual understanding that certain risks must be shared," said Butkevicius.

The Cabinet sitting on Wednesday will discuss the plan to assist business that has sustained losses over the Russian embargo. According to the prime minister, losses possible in dairy, meat processing sectors, fruit and vegetable industry will be presented during the meeting.
