EU Commission's fruit and vegetable support to benefit Estonians indirectly

BC, Tallinn, 19.08.2014.Print version
The European Commission announced on Monday that it will give the European Union's fruit and vegetable growers 125 million euros to help them cope with the impact of the Russian sanctions; the Estonian Ministry of Agriculture said that such a measure will reduce the risk of abnormal price fluctuations at our market too, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Estonian Agriculture Ministry Agricultural Market Management Department Head Erkki Miller said it is a market withdrawal or non-marketing action used in the fruit and vegetable sector in the past too. "The aim is to avoid a major price drop in a situation where supply exceeds demand significantly temporarily, resulting in abnormally low prices," said Miller.

It should become clear this week which, if any, farmers and companies in Estonia would get the support, but most likely Estonia will benefit only from indirect effects of the support. Last year, a whole 95% of vegetables exported from Estonia went to the European Union's internal market, and 98% of imported vegetables came from EU member states.

Miller said, however, that it is very important for Estonia that these measures take effect, because it reduces the risk of abnormal price fluctuations at our market too.
