Merkel in Riga: EU could look at supporting goods producers in wake of sanctions

Print versionSpeaking to reporters in Riga yesterday after her meeting with Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, German Chancellor Angela Merkel mentioned that in a "non-standard situation, the European Union could review the possibility of support packages for goods producers in wake of the counter-sanctions announced by Russia., informs LETA.

Merkel underlined that the European Union's action in setting sanctions against Russia was "inevitable", because the Union's stance must be crystal clear on what is occurring in Ukraine.
The Chancellor was quick to point out that Germany too has been hit hard by the Russian sanctions, reminding that the ban on pork import from Germany has been in effect since the beginning of the year.
