African swine-fever established in several more pigs in Latvia

Latest lab results confirm two more domestic pigs infected with African swine-fever at two farms in Kraslava Region's Kalniesi County, Food and Veterinary Service spokeswoman Anna Joffe told the business information portal Nozare.lv, cites LETA.

She also said that a wild board found in Dagda Region's Kepova County has also been found infected with the disease.

 

All of the domestic pigs on the two farms will be liquidated today.

 

This means that, so far, African swine-fever has been established in a total of 23 wild board and 10 domestic pigs in Latvia.

 

From June 26 to July 17, Food and Veterinary Service inspectors have visited 4,409 homes, with 630 of them holding domestic pigs.

 

Inspectors have also carried out lab test on a total of 1,580 domestic pigs.

 

African swine fever is not harmful to humans. This is the first time that African swine fever has been registered in the territory of Latvia.

 

The government has already declared a state of emergency in the area where the African swine-fever breakout has occurred in southeastern Latvia.
