In an interview on Rietumu radio today, Liepaja Mayor Uldis Sesks said that active talks are currently taking place with potential buyers for the financially troubled metallurgical company Liepajas metalurgs, and that ''five, six investors are showing serious interest'', writes LETA.

He said that the most interest is from Russia, as the country has several large metallurgical companies who are attracted to the European market, and hope to successfully implement their business aims in Europe through the Baltic countries, the mayor points out.

''There are also companies from the European Union who are expressing serious interest in Liepajas metalurgs,'' Sesks added.

He also went on to say that the end-July is the deadline to submit purchase offers, and then it will become more clear who the most serious potential buyers will be.

As reported, over 1,500 Liepajas metalurgs employees have been laid-off since the company was deemed insolvent late last year.
